A roof rack frees up cabin and tub space and gives you somewhere to mount a tent, awning, recovery boards or lights. Choosing well comes down to what you carry and how often.
Questions to ask first
- What will go up top? A rooftop tent needs a strong, flat platform; boards and a shovel need far less
- How much weight? Always stay within your vehicle's roof load limit, and remember the rack itself counts
- How will you reach it? A ladder or side steps make loading safer
Full-length vs short racks
A full-length rack spreads load and gives maximum space. A short rack keeps weight and wind noise down and suits lighter loads. For the GWM Tank 300, choose the Venom TQ ARK full-length rack or the TQ ARK short rack.
Platforms
Platforms are flat, low-profile and easy to mount accessories to. The Rhino Pioneer 6 platform with Backbone for the Next Gen Wildtrak is a strong option for Ranger owners planning serious touring.
Easy access
Defender owners can add a fold-out aluminium side ladder for safe roof access.
Loading tips
- Keep heavy items low and centred
- Tie down every item, then check straps after the first few kilometres
- Expect a little more wind noise and fuel use with a loaded roof
