Electric side steps (also called power steps or retractable running boards) fold out when you open a door and tuck back under the body when you close it. They have become one of the most popular upgrades for tall utes and SUVs.
How they work
A motor on each side is linked to the vehicle's door signals. Open a door and the step lowers; close all doors and it retracts. Many kits also include lighting so you can see where you are stepping at night.
Fixed steps vs electric steps
| Fixed steps | Electric steps | |
|---|---|---|
| Ease of entry | Good | Very good (step sits lower) |
| Off-road clearance | Reduced | Kept, as the step tucks away |
| Look when parked | Always visible | Hidden when closed |
| Complexity | Simple | Motors and wiring |
Who should consider them?
- Families with kids or older passengers
- Lifted vehicles or bigger tyres
