Black 4 inch snorkel on Toyota Hilux

Snorkel Care and Water Crossing Basics

A snorkel is a great addition to a touring 4x4, but it needs a little care, and it is important to understand what it can and cannot do.

Important: a snorkel is not a waterproofing kit

A snorkel raises your engine's air intake. It does not make your vehicle waterproof. Electrical components, diff and gearbox breathers, and the cabin can all be damaged by water. Always check your vehicle manufacturer's stated wading depth and stay within it.

Snorkel care

  • Check hose clamps and joints are tight, especially after corrugated roads
  • Inspect seals where the snorkel meets the guard and the air box
  • Clean the snorkel head of dust, bugs and leaves
  • Service your air filter more often after dusty trips

Water crossing basics

  1. Stop and assess: check depth, current, entry and exit before driving in. If in doubt, do not cross
  2. Never cross flooded roads: If it's flooded, forget it
  3. Walk it only if safe: never enter fast-moving water or crocodile country
  4. Drive slowly and steadily: create a small bow wave and keep a constant speed
  5. Do not stop midstream unless you have to
  6. Check afterwards: test brakes, and have breathers and fluids checked if you suspect water entry

Find a snorkel for your vehicle in the snorkels collection.
